MPC engineered a 13m x 3m composite Welcome Wall for London City Airport’s expansion, replicating poured concrete while meeting tight deadlines. Completed in under four weeks, it combined technical precision with striking aesthetics.
The project began with a proof-of-concept model before progressing to full-scale mould construction. After curing and quality inspection, the composite panels were transported and installed on site. The result is a modern, durable Welcome Wall that doubles as a digital media advertising space, enhancing the airport’s new passenger experience.
MPC was commissioned to design and engineer a bespoke composite wall located at the entrance of the site as part of London City Airport’s expansion programme. The structure needed to replicate the look of poured concrete while meeting strict installation timelines.
The process began with producing a scaled proof-of-concept model based on technical drawings. This allowed us to confirm the aesthetic, anticipate challenges, and refine the moulding approach. We then constructed a precision wooden mould large enough to form the composite panels to exact specification.
Once cured, the composite sections were inspected to ensure quality before transportation to site. Both halves of the Welcome Wall were delivered to London City Airport and carefully installed, creating a striking digital media backdrop and a modern centrepiece for the terminal’s new passenger welcome area.
