MPC was tasked with refurbishing nine defence sector AFFF fire lockers, inside and out, including reapplying ID stencils. The challenge lay in removing failed OEM coatings without damaging sensitive internal components.
Avoiding abrasive blasting, the team used careful hand-stripping techniques to remove all dead paint before priming with Interguard 5000 and finishing with Interthane 900 in our controlled spray booth. Hand-painted stencils restored original markings. The meticulous preparation ensured an exceptionally smooth, durable finish, demonstrating MPC’s precision and attention to detail.
The challenge presented was to refurbish 9 AFFF fire lockers both inside and out. We also needed to re-stencil all the ID marking previously there. The original paint coating from OEM was dead. This meant that the lockers would need to be stripped back to the bare substrate. Abrasive blasting was a potential option to remove the dead paint however, due to electrical coupling and heating elements this was subsequently deemed unwise.
When the lockers were received, they were stripped back to the bare substrate. Knowing that abrasive blasting wasn’t a viable option, the lockers were stripped by hand, using needle guns and disc abrading. Although this presented more of a challenge than abrasive blasting, this significantly reduced the risk of damages to the systems.
Once all the lockers were stripped back, they were thoroughly cleaned and degreased. They were then primed using Interguard 5000, an epoxy anticorrosive. Once cured they were then spray painted using a polyurethane finish Interthane 900. All coats were applied in a controlled, dust free environment using our in house 8m x 5m spray booth.
Once the paint had fully cured, the stencils were added. These were hand painted on (rolled and brushed) using Interlac in various colours to match the original signage.
A smooth and professional finish was achieved. The overall success of this project can be largely attributed to the prep work of removing the original paint. Having an extremely smooth and well prepped surface to spray on greatly highlighted the finish we achieved.
The overall outcome of the refurbishment of the AFFF lockers exceeded the expectations of the client.
