MPC undertook the meticulous removal and reapplication of varnish to a superyacht’s hull and interior, safeguarding delicate mahogany veneers and complex interior detailing while restoring the vessel to a flawless, luxury finish.
The project involved precision sanding, careful repair of surface imperfections, and the application of up to eight coats of Epifanes varnish. Using specialist techniques to protect vulnerable materials, MPC achieved a high-gloss, durable finish that enhanced the yacht’s beauty while providing essential long-term protection against marine conditions.
This project involved the careful removal of existing varnish from the hull and interior of a superyacht, along with remedial work to locally damaged areas, before revarnishing with up to eight coats of Epifanes varnish to superyacht standard. While sanding the hull may sound straightforward, protecting the 1.5mm Brazilian Mahogany veneer over the strip-planked structure required exceptional care to avoid sanding through and causing light spots or structural damage.
The interior presented a different challenge. The aft seating, constructed from strip planks with open gaps, demanded meticulous hand-sanding between each plank and supporting timber - an extremely time-consuming process. Additional care was needed to safeguard the vessel’s intricate dashboard dials and brightwork, all of which required precision handling to avoid any damage.
Our approach combined industry-standard processes with skilled craftsmanship. We machine-sanded with light grades to remove surface layers, stopping before damage occurred, then hand block-sanded with the grain to protect vulnerable plank edges. Small imperfections were repaired with UV-curing varnish, reducing downtime.
Once prepped, we deep-cleaned our 8m x 5m spray booth and surfaces before spray-applying the varnish to manufacturer specifications, flatting back between coats to refine the finish. Thanks to our painter’s skill, the final coat was left straight from the gun, eliminating the need for further polishing and preserving product thickness.
The result was a flawless, long-lasting finish that both protects the vessel from degradation and enhances the beauty of the original craftsmanship - bringing the vision to life.
